English version
Outsider Art is considered as the Art that is located next to the artistic circle (mainstream) and it is elaborated by psychiatric patients that did not have an academic education precisely, it does not mean they do not do Art rather they create it with authenticity of expression and communication, in such a way described as psychic automatism, it means it is elaborated by impulses, they do not have a clear idea of what they are going to do, instead they develop their Art on the process, in the elaboration of their workart they show their inner imagination in a simbolic speech.
Historic Background
In 1922 the german psychiatrist Hans Prinzhorn began to collect the workart of his patients and later to publish a text called "The mentally ill Art" where is mentioned that the workart problems being analized there, they were not measured according to their merits, instead they were analized by a psychologic vision, making stress in a re valorization of this condition without putting apart the informative value that they could add in investigation terms.
Hans Prinzhorn used to speak about the material origins, emerged of the spontaneity of each patient according to the internal neccesity of each one and without any type of external inspiration, adding the lack of artistic instruction of these individuals.
With these kinds of questions is the reason of the creation of the Outsider Art term, which refers to the artistic production out of the artistic circle or mainstream, the term was designated by Roger Cardinal as an attempt to translate to english the art brut created by Jeann Dubuffet to designate this art in brute, product of the instantaneity and the impulse, without having the training and conditionals that influence in the production after the formal study of art.
Jeann Dubuffet began to visit psychiatrist hospitals and jails in search of these types of pieces, forming the Compagnie d l`Art Brut, a group of 60 persons dedicated to the search of new works, within their founders we can find Jean Dubuffet, André Breton,Jean Paulhan, Charles Ratton, Henri-Pierre Roché, Michel Tapié y Edmon Bomsel, finally it was created the collection of Art Brut, first in the Hamptons, United States, and later in Lausana Suiza.
As it is in Jean Dubuffet case, there are several artists that because of the searchings that they were doing, the charm of the " spontaneous flow from the brain to the paper ", the rejection to the academic tradition and the taken aesthetic, began to approach to these types of institutions and in specific to these type of "artists". Some cases are Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, the surrealistics , the CoBrA group among others.
It is easy to recognize the reason of the interest of these characters to review the process from which these individuals are working, in spite of all the diferences, there is several leading threads in the topics because that the questions and reflections are originated from one same point in common: the human condition. Back in Psychiatry it was presented a new level within the therapeutic practices that began of the elaborated observations by Prinzhorn , Fritz Mohr and the same Dubuffet and his Art Brut: The Art Therapy.
One of the begginers of this figure is attributed to Margaret Naumburg, in the forties Margaret Naumburg explores the properties of the artistic production as a mean able to manifest the inner imagination of the patients, in the same way that Jean Dubuffet signal the value of these processes located in the authenticity of the expression and communication, the creation of a simbolic speech.
The practice began to be spread to clinics, prisions, rehabilitation centers and assistence centers and social readaptation in the United States and Europe being formal toward the sisties. Another important example of this practice is the case of the Clinic Menninger in Topeka Kansas, where the Manninger family began a program of activities to psychiatrist patients given by the artist Mary Huntoon.
